Fasting 101: Preparation & Detox Assistance

Juice plenty!  

Prep time is essential.  Make a list, check it twice.


Here is a sample grocery list: *you can also find one here for the juicing for fast juicers

  • 5 sweet potatoes
  • 5 bell peppers
  • 2 turnips
  • 2 bunches of celery
  • Tons of greens 
  • Apples
  • a Bag of Lemon
  • 2 Hot Peppers
  • 2 Bunches of Beets
  • 2 Bunches of Carrots
  • 5 Cucumbers
  • Aloe
  • Ginger out the wazoo (okay maybe like 3-5 ginger-men)
  • Turmeric 
  • Lime
  • Oranges
  • A Pineapple as your sweet treat 
  • Fresh Cilantro, Basil, Parsley

Before Juicing.

DECIDE: WHY JUICE FAST? Set your intentions, make them clear!  Is juicing for you ?

  •  Have a basic recipe index of mostly veggie juices. Here are 6 recipes listed with similar ingredients
  • Go Shopping (yay! I love shopping!) for a juicer & food
    • Breville: Fast Juicer, more wasteful, easier to clean,
      • Juice only lasts 1 hour
    • Omega: Slow/Macerating Juicer: harder to clean, less wasteful, must chop veggies before
      • Juice lasts 3 days
      • *There are other better ones out there, I have this one that I got for $100 off eBay, I do have to use a fine strainer into a bowl in order to keep the pulp out.  I used to have a Kuving’s that I sold because it wasn’t that much better for the price in my opinion.
  • Stash away Snack foods
  • Eat raw and vegan for at least 2-3 days before beginning. 
  • Consider a colon cleanse product during those 2-3 days of eating raw.  Some people appreciate the olive oil flush (not me!).  I begin taking the Colon and Liver Formula early as to not shock my body.    *Note: if you choose to use a detox kit you will more than likely experience detox symptoms that may be flu like (H/A, fatigue, exhaustion, etc..)
  • Purchase Digestive Enzymes to have after juicing in order to continue giving your organs a “vacation” if you are on a gut healing protocol.
  • Purchase Epsom Salts, an Enema (silicone $24, regular is $9.99)/ Douche Bag from Walgreens, Castor Oil, Wool Socks, Skin Brush, *See methods below to choose what to buy for your detox arsenal.

During Juicing.

  • Scrape your tongue every morning with a spoon or tongue scraper.  This is an ancient Vedic morning ritual that I include in my morning routine and use to determine the amount of time I should juice *I juice until the film of my tongue is thinner.  You will know what I am talking about when you experience it!   • Pick out 1 or two of the detox assistance methods.  They are the bomb & whichever one resonates with you will become a new tool in your health / self-care arsenal.


  • Be sure to choose day 2 and 3 when you can rest.  This is not essential, but it is really nice to have this option, especially if you are in a healing phase or if it’s your first time juicing.
  • If you are leaving somewhere the next morning, pre-chop your veg & fruit and place it in Tupperware.  Is there somewhere you may want to haul a juice with you? Or take a shaker cup and a cold-pressed juice with you if you have long hours.  It is essential to keep the juice cold to keep it fresh, have an ice pack and cooler ready in the freezer.
  • You can only save juice for a few hours to a few days from a cold pressed or masticating juicer. The link is for shopping examples of cold pressed juicers. 

Symptom Relief from Detox.

I recommend to just choose a couple of these assisted detoxification methods or else you will spend your entire day simply cleaning and juicing.  If that’s your jam, power to you, go for it!  I am sure one or two of these will resonate with you more than others.  

  • REST!

    • Take Naps, even if you are not a usual napper.  
    • I generally like to do 8 sun salutes then a 10-20 minute Chavasana if I feel spent for the day
    • The sun salutes allow for deep breathing for detoxing through the lungs
  • Dry Skin Brushing every morning to aid in elimination via our largest organ (our skin!)

    • Step in the shower
    • Start from the bottom of your feet, using long light strokes up your legs toward your heart
    • Go over each spot about 10X, being gentle.  Your skin should be pink but not stinging or red
    • Repeat with your arms
    • On the abdomen, back, chest, and armpits use small circular strokes always moving toward the heart
    • Shower & end on cold (this is great for lymphatic & blood flow)
    • Massage yourself with a nourishing oil afterwards
  • Castor Oil Pack.

    • on Belly allows to aid in detox through the belly & the ricin in Castor addresses inflammation in abdomen and sex organs.
    • Rub oil on your belly
    • Place a towel over the oil (be careful not to wear your fave bedtime suit, this oil is VISCOUS and stains like whoa.  Baking soda can help remove oil stains)
    • Wrap your abdomen with saran wrap so the towel stays on (Castor Inflammation-Fighting Burrito!)
    • Bonus! apply a hot water pack or heating pad over your belly.  I snuggle with this like its my dog or boyfriend and it’s amazing womb comfort.
  • Epsom Salt Bath.

    • Use tons of salt! I am talking an entire 1 lb package to a full tub. 
  • Enemas.  

    • Have you ever had your coffee up that way? Really it rocks for energy and without the jitters.  It is a common Naturopathic treatment for cancer patients to aid in liver detoxification.  You can find an enema bag at your local drug store.  Coffee enemas are great for Headache Relief.  
    • Prep your coffee in a french press the night before or 8 hrs before you plan to enema it. 
    •   Put room temperature coffee in the enema bag and fill the rest with water if the fluid is not enough to get up there.  
    • And enema away, sideways laying on your right side (where your liver is).  Try and hold it for 2-5 minutes.  Holy crap 😉
  • Wet sock treatment, commonly called warming socks. That is just plain deceiving 😉 

 This is probably my favorite refreshers for many common ailments such as insomnia, headaches, first sign of getting ill, exhaustion, stagnation, and stagnated lymph. The cold socks along with the “breathability” of the wool allow for the body to increase circulation down to the feet and back, causing increased circulation through the lymphatic system and sequestering more immune cells to the periphery to do their work.  The mechanism of action of the peripheral vessels is a rebound vasodialation


    • Place wool socks by your bedside. 
    • Soak cotton socks in water & place the freezer until nearly frozen solid. 
    • Make sure your feet are warm.  If they are not rinse them c hot water (or even better, do this after an Epsom salt bath)
    • Sit on your bed and put on nearly frozen solid socks and then put wool socks over them. 
    • Trust me, you will wake up with dry feet and feeling super refreshed

    So,. I eat ONLY raw vegetables and Vegan starting Tuesday, and then the cleanse begins on Thursday? I have the papers you gave me last week with the list of things to buy. I bought several items from Amazon like the Dandy Blend, Raw nuts, etc. I got my Juicer in yesterday.
